Why a waste allowance?

Edge cuts, breakages and spares for later repairs all come on top of the measured area. 10% is the usual figure for a straight lay; diagonal patterns, rooms with many corners and large-format tiles call for around 15%. The tile count is the area including waste divided by one tile's area, rounded up; grout gaps are ignored, that small difference sits inside the allowance.
